Reduce stress the Brazilian way with Brazilian Ginseng - The rainforest adaptogen
The rainforests of South America are home to some of the most potent herbs on the planet, which is not surprising when you consider that there are estimated to be around 250,000 species of flora - of which perhaps only 1% have been analysed in modern scientific studies.
One of the most significant, and a plant that the Brazilians call 'para tudo' - 'for everything' - is Brazilian Ginseng, known to botany as pfaffia paniculata, and also commonly known as Suma.
Brazilian Ginseng is a herb that is classified as an adaptogen - a term that has historically been used to describe Asian Ginsengs, Astragulus, Rhodiola and other herbs that have a 'balancing' or 'normalising' effect on the body. The use of adaptogens leads to improved immune function, and reduces the effects of stress on the body - and their use can improve energy levels and mood as well. Such supplements are proving to be increasingly popular in the West - where the fallout from modern lifestyles is often stress, anxiety and exhaustion.
The Brazilian Ginseng root contains a broad spectrum of nutrients, and is also superb detoxifier. High levels of the important mineral magnesium, and B-complex vitamins are part of the reason for Brazilian Ginseng's reputation as a stress beater - but the herb also contains a huge number of other actives. These include plant chemicals called saponins, some of which have been shown to help normalise blood sugar levels - leading to improved energy levels and mood.
Brazilian Ginseng is a popular supplement with menopausal women, and is used to treat a wide range of hormonal disorders, as well as for nervous tension and fatigue. The Brazilians call it 'for everything' for good reason - and have used it as a tonic for hundreds of years - it truly is a herb that can be of benefit to everyone.
