Indians have been using Tayuya since prehistoric times, and the value of this herb is undisputed. It has traditionally been used as a tonic, usually combined with a bit of honey to tone down the strong, bitter taste.
The tea is also being used in athletic training and recovery to help remove lactic acid accumulation, and to relieve emotional fatigue.
Cucurbitacins, glucosides, and phytochemicals with antioxidant, and analgesic properties have been isolated in Tayuya.
Saponins, sterols, and phenolics are also known to occur in other plants of the same family. According to another study, entitled “Superoxide scavenging properties of flavonoids in a non-enzymic system” some phytochemicals in tayuya act as potent scavengers of free radicals, providing an antioxidant effect.
