Gentian is classified as a 'bitter'. Bitters are herbs that stimulate appetite and digestion. As the name suggests, they have a bitter taste and work by reflex action on the taste buds. When tasted, the appetite is stimulated and the gut prepares itself for food. Digestive enzymes, the gut muscles and the liver are all stimulated by bitters. Gentian is great for increasing the appetite in anorexia or reduced appetite whatever the reason. Because Gentian stimulates digestion, those with problems digesting certain foods, fats for example, may find it extremely useful. Combines well with Artichoke and Dandelion.
