White willow is the aspirin of the herbal world! It is a herb that contains salicylates. These are the chemicals aspirin is derived from. The herbal salicylates do not have the side-effects that orthodox aspirin does however. People who are allergic to salicylates though should avoid White willow as well. The main use of White willow is in the treatment of inflammatory joint disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis. It reduces inflammation and has pain-killing properties. White willow can also be used like aspirin in the treatment of colds, flu and fevers to reduce temperature and ease aches and pains. It also has a useful place in the treatment of chronic headaches.
